Racing News for 7/19/01+TOUR DE FRANCE

REST DAY: American Lance Armstrong (USPS) went into today's rest day in a familiar, yet unusual position. Having bested his main rivals over Stage 10 & l1, he now has over three minutes on rivals Jan Ullrich (TEL) and Joseba Beloki (ONC). However, he must still reel in the last two remaining survivors of the Stage 8 men of might. Simon (BJR) and Kivilev (COF) will need to be chased and accounted for over the next three days, as the Tour heads into the Pyrenees for three consecutive mountain-top finishes.

Today, during the rest day, Armstrong stated he goes into tomorrow with two objectives: first, to displace the aforementioned men from the top two spots of the GC and secondly, to continue to consolidate his lead over Ullrich, Beloki and the rest. Armstrong today appeared to be willing to take on the task alone (with his USPS mates) but, also appealed to the rest of the leaders to assist in the topple of Simon and Kivilev.

Armstrong will hope that today's rest day will revitalize his team, particularly his climbing lieutenants Heras and Rubiera, who struggled during the first part of the race. A first chapter filled with rain, wind and long, spirited breakways!

Today's "active" rest day featured a morning plane ride from Grenoble to Perpignon as well as a couple of hours of saddle time in the early afternoon. Tomorrow's stage 12 features 166.5 kilometres from Perpignan to Ax-les-Thermes, with Cat.1 Col de Jau(22.8km 5.2%), followed by a Cat.2, two Cat.3's and a finish at Cat.1 Ax-les-Thermes (9.1km 7.2%).
