|daho’s Knobby Tire Series has obtained official sanctioning from USA Cycling as the Idaho NORBA State Championship Race Series. |
The Knobby Tires Series consists of four races: The Coyote Classic on Saturday May 10, The Kelly Canyon Challenge on Saturday July 12; The 19th Annual Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge--a NORBA Classic Race--on the weekend of August 2 & 3; and the Idaho Cross Country NORBA Championship Finals at Soldier Mountain on Saturday August 30.
The Knobby Tire Series was founded this year by long-time Idaho cyclists Davey Moore and Cynthia Gibson. The NORBA state championship series is being put together in association with the Lost River Cycling Club, promoters of the Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge.
“All I can say is WOW," said Moore, “NORBA state championship sanctioning adds tons to the series. It makes all our races more important in national rankings. It also puts the winners in the record books as sanctioned state champions in conjunction with the national cycling organizations. Idaho will have some nationally-recognized champions for the first time in years. We couldn’t be more excited."
Andy Bopp, who founded Lost River Cycling in 1996 to take over the White Knob Challenge, said “Lost River Cycling and the Knobby Tire Series are making a great partnership. Working together with the local biking community and USA Cycling makes our races better. Most importantly, it
means our racers are gonna have more fun than ever."
The Coyote Classic and Soldier Mountain races are on all new courses. “Lots of time and sweat has gone into building the Coyote Classic course" Moore added. “We’ve just about finished and riders will find it amazing." The Kelly Canyon course is returning to the Idaho race scene after a few years out of the spotlight. More information is available about the Knobby Tire Series on-line at www.knobbytireseries.com. The Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge is the longest running mountain bike race in the Northwest. It is designated a NORBA Classic race. Held for the past 18 years the first weekend in August in Mackay Idaho, the race features some of best climbing, wildest descending and most magnificent scenery imaginable. This year’s White Knob also has riders competing for a stage race championship with a mountain bike short track race stage and head to head drag race stage. “The White Knob will be a weekend-long event with free camping, barbeques and exciting spectator friendly race events," Bopp added.
