PowerBar Named Official Energy Bar and Gel of the Tour de France

05/06/2003
PowerBar, the company that created and continues to lead the athletic energy bar market, has been named the official supplier of energy bars and energy gels to riders in the legendary 2003 Tour de France bicycle race. Coupled with their official sponsorship of four-time Tour de France Champion, Lance Armstrong, PowerBar will now fuel all riders in July's hundredth running of the world's most heralded bicycle race with PowerBar energy bars and PowerGel energy gels.

This year, the famed race will feature 198 cyclists from 22 teams. The athletes will pedal 3,350 kilometers (2,082 miles) in 22 stages with only two race-free days to rest and recuperate. Racers can burn up to 10,000 calories on a rigorous day. PowerBar, with its proven athletic energy products and 17 years experience in sports nutrition, is uniquely qualified to be the
official supplier of this world class event.

"We're elated to be providing PowerBars and PowerGels to all of the riders in one of the most celebrated and grueling athletic events in the world," said Cindy Vallar, Vice President and General Manager of PowerBar. "The Tour de France is focused on athletes, competition and sportsmanship -- the heritage upon which PowerBar is built."

Lance Armstrong, who has been cycling with PowerBar energy bars since 1993, will compete this year to be one of only three cyclists in history to win the race five consecutive times. Armstrong's coach, Chris Carmichael, estimates the champion expends an average 6,240 calories each day of the Tour, totaling more than 100,000 total calories burned during the event. To fuel this extraordinary human engine, Armstrong consumes more than 100 PowerBar Performance energy bars and 200 PowerBar PowerGel energy gels during the race.

Designed to enhance a variety of endurance activities, PowerBar Performance energy bars are formulated with oat bran as a primary source of carbohydrates to help moderate the release of the bar's energy into the body over a sustained period. PowerBar Performance bars help athletes achieve an optimum level of performance by delivering long-lasting energy along with the
vitamins, minerals and protein their bodies need. The most fortified of leading energy bars, PowerBar Performance bars contain eight B-complex vitamins, as well as vitamins C & E, which are important for protection against free radicals. Essential minerals including iron, zinc, calcium,
magnesium and phosphorus round out the nutritional components of the bars.

PowerBar PowerGel carbohydrate gels are designed to provide athletes a quick surge of healthy energy. A packet of PowerGel provides 110 calories composed of 80 percent complex and 20 percent simple carbohydrates, as well as antioxidant vitamins C and E, electrolytes and PowerBar's proprietary blend of essential amino acids. PowerGel is easily digested to quickly replenish the
glycogen stores depleted during exercise.

In addition to its partnerships with Lance Armstrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Tour de France, PowerBar has a long history of supporting key cycling events and associations. Accordingly, PowerBar is also the official sports nutrition partner of the global cycling association, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
