More Information

solid mountain bike     On: 2010-03-08

pros: well built, disk brakes

cons: heavy, rear suspension is so stiff that its useless, disk brakes will require some tuning out of the box

overall its a good bike for the money. for those looking to do some serious long distance riding id recommend looking elsewhere for a lighter bike.
My Amazon experience     On: 2010-02-20

I recently purchased this bike after doing much research and reading the other reviews. The bike arrived in a timely manner. BUT, the rear derailleur was bent catywhampous. And there were two scratches on the bike, but I can live with em. I called Amazon and they resolved the matter with sending me a whole bike in which to take the part and replace with mine. They cover the shipping both ways and I should be getting it quicker than the original purchase. I am of course impressed. Though I will be having it put together by a bike guy. I did put the first one together in no time at all until it came time to adjust the deraileur, that was 4 hours. Luckily, I have other bikes at the house, and yes the the derailleur was bent. Overall, for the price and time it is worth the price. I would have had to spend twice the price locally, Ill live with older but quality parts. The bike is mainly for transportation and exercise. This could have been avoided with better packaging, wouldnt it be cheaper than sending another bike? My only question is...did they send me a previously returned bike? THX
Not so good...     On: 2010-02-08

We bought this bike for our son for Christmas, and on his second ride the gears stopped functioning properly. So, we returned it in exchange for another hoping it was a fluke, but the replacement bike did the exact same thing. We ended up sending it back as well, and just getting a refund. Amazon is great about returns though!
Bike by mail     On: 2010-02-08

This is good bike for the price. It is a little more heavy than other more expensive mountain bikes. Easy to assemble. Gears will need adjustment.
Good Bike value     On: 2010-01-27

I was looking for a bike to ride while on my beach weekends and vacations. I like everything about the bike except for two items: 1)the disc brakes need much adjustment to get them to not drag on the rotor, especially the front. 2)the derailler on the pedal sprocket needs A LOT of adjustment to shift up and down properly. I considered upgrading to an expensive pro model derailler but finally got this one to work.
Good for the price....     On: 2009-12-28

Like many other owners have said, it really must be "adjusted" at a bike shop for optimal use. The front brake takes some adjusting to sit just right and I personally had to rip off the plastic cover by the rear gears to keep the chain from catching, but after all this, I am still happy with the bike, seeing that others would have cost me $600 and up. Ive taken this bike down trails at 35mph, jumping every bump on the way down, and as long as you keep the chain taught in a high gear and tighten all the bolts down well, you will have no problem. If it can handle the trails that I take it down in IL and MO, it should do just fine for most riders. I saw simalarities in the design of this bike to some Ironhorse models ranging from $1k to $3k, and that did it for me. Heres a pic of the bike in Shilom Springs State Park.
Great bike!     On: 2009-12-06

Havent used a bike since my mid teen years and never put a bike together, order this bike after several weeks of researching and its great and easy to use, packaging was very good and putting together was not hard at all, the only part that you have to put attention to is the front brake system but once your done is a great trail bike, have used it on street for about a week before taking to the trail and its been great the seat could be more comfortable on street it tends to get uncomfortable on a 1 or 1 1/2 hour ride but on the trail the bike is as fun as it gets, ride with some friends and with their bikes I noticed that when they brake on trail their bike brakes lock and the bike starts sliding all over the place but with this bike you brake and it stops, the lower gears are fantastic to get you trough the steep areas and you can really feel the suspension working on the way down its pretty cool, it fast, responsive and very sturdy, I think this is the best investment Ive done to get me back in shape, On street my biddies mountain bike seams a bit faster on the high gears but I dont know if is the bike or the fact that Im completely out of shape, but I was able to keep up better on the trail.

I 100% recommend this product for anyone that is in the market for a mountain bike, hope this helps.
One well-designed, sturdy bike!     On: 2009-11-15

After shopping around and reading reviews of other bikes, I decided on buying this one, even though it was on the higher end of mountain bikes under $300. I decided not to buy a road bike for two reasons: 1) the route I take to commute to and from work has many conditions unfavorable to road bikes and 2) the increased cost of road bikes. My commute is about 13 miles from home and Ive been riding this bike for almost a month now 2-4 days a week. I can hop off sidewalks, run over speed bumps, go through gravel and dirt and the roughness/shock is substantially reduced due to the dual-suspension system on the bike. The brakes and gearshifters (after properly adjusting them) make a comfortable fit. The gears shift very smoothly from one speed to the next. The pedals, though made of a plastic composite, havent cracked or broken yet.

Now onto the cons. One of the first things I noticed after riding is that my inner seat bones would get sore if I rode the bike for more than two days consecutively. Eventually, I had to replace the seat with something more comfortable. Its something any male bicyclist should do anyway because the stock seat (and many others with similar design) can cause impotence after long-term use. Secondly, the bike is on the heavier side weighing 38 lbs stock. Theres not much to be done about this because the frame is naturally heavy. You can replace the tires and/or wheels, the seat, the handlebars, the pedals, and switch the disk brakes to rim brakes; but if youre going to do all that, you should probably get a more expensive bike that weighs less in the beginning.

Overall, Im very satisfied with my purchase because I know that its going to last me a long time. For the amount of money that it costed, if it does get stolen I cant get too upset. When I get tired of the weight of this bike (or if it gets stolen before then), Ill look into getting a more expensive, lighter bike.
Great Bike for the Money     On: 2009-10-20

A Little complicated to assemble. derailer was bent during shipping. took it to the local bike shop and they did assembly and dialed it in no time.... Add $50 to the cost to get someone to assemble it and dial it in if your not a bike expert.

Other than that. great bike for the money.... very happy....

Not as good as you think     On: 2009-10-10

If you looking for real MTB, try the others. It just a bike with cheap parts and also this bike will let you waste more strength to paddle and creat a lots of metal noise. Not worthy to spend $249 on this one. Piece of junk.
The panzer of bikes     On: 2009-09-26

Its amazing how a light weight bike (And a low prize bike) can hold my 205lbs, in my 2 hours daily workout around Granada golf course in Coral Gables. Definitely a must buy.
Big bang for your buck     On: 2009-09-17

This bike has a ton of high-end features at a ridiculous price. As a starter bike, I thought it probably would be cheaply made and not last long. Ive beat on the thing for a year in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The thing is a tank. Granted, its a little heavier than Id like, but Id need to spend triple this price to get similar features on a lighter bike. Its really a lot of fun.
A Good Reintroduction to Bikes     On: 2009-09-15

I purchased this bike in February of 2009. I was looking for something to improve my cardio health but wasnt sure that I would really enjoy biking. After seeing numerous ads in the online classifieds of nearly new $1000 to $2000 bikes being sold for substantial discounts after being ridden for only a few miles, I decided to err towards caution in my initial purchase. I was hoping that by purchasing a mid priced bike I should get a reasonable quality components and not be deterred by a low quality bike. Assembly was basic requiring me to attach the front wheel, handlebar, pedals and seat. Everything else was preassembled. Pretty simple really. Inflate the tires and in 45 minutes it was ready to ride.

I am 58 and live in the mountains in the Pacific Northwest so I was looking for a full suspension bike, mostly to ease the shocks and jolts from riding on bumpy chip sealed roads. Since I was looking for a bike for exercise, weight of the bike was not a huge factor to me.

Having not owned a bike since my 20s, I was unfamiliar with the improvements in cycling. The 21 speeds seemed a bit of overkill to me at first, but now I find it well worth having in the rolling hills in my area. The push button indexed shifters were a real treat to me and easy to learn. The rear derailleur shifted extremely smoothly with no jumps clicks or clatters especially in the upshift. It simply changed ratio and I could feel a little extra resistance in the pedals as I gained speed. The front derailleur is a little less sophisticated but it works adequately. The disk brakes are a good idea in the wet region I live because they are far less likely to lose effectiveness due to getting wet. I remember rim brakes that would become almost ineffectual after riding through a large puddle. My only complaint would be the squealing noise they make at the end of a stop.

On flat roads the gearing is adequate to allow me to pedal along at 22+ mph until my legs tire, but it isnt designed to be a race bike. I have climbed some rather challenging but short hills (total of about 400 gain over a mile and a quarter) and pedaling like mad, I can climb a 12% short grade at 4.8 mph. The bike is heavy, approximately 37 pounds so it makes the hills a little more challenging. Over varied terrain on paved roads I can routinely average around 14 mph. Going down the above series of grades I have coasted up to 38 mph.

The only things I have found to be problematic are that as the bike breaks in, the cables stretch a little so the shifters need to be adjusted after a 100 or so miles. (Common on all bikes) The inner tube in the rear wheel failed at about 130 miles when the joint around the valve gave out while I was off the bike taking a photo. That brings me to a second problem, the tubes. Because of the deep V rims (which makes them stronger) they require a long schrader valve tube. Department stores carry the standard size but not the 48mm valved tubed this bike requires. I would recommend that anyone buying this bike order a couple of 26 x 1.9/2.125 48mm valved tubes at the same time.

The bike is fun to ride and so far, after over 700 miles, it seems very durable. The only problems were the aforementioned inner tube and derailleur adjustments. The seat isnt the best either, but unless you ride more than 30 minutes at a time it will do. The only changes I have done is to replace the saddle with a male gel saddle (I sometimes ride for two hours or more at a time), added a couple of lights for safety, a bike computer, a clamp to the seat post carrier rack (a cheap and effective dual purpose rear fender), and replaced the knobby off road tires with a smoother tire designed for pavement for lower rolling resistance.

Overall I am very pleased with the bike. The bike is good quality especially for the price. I have recently been test riding some higher end bikes and the only difference is that they are are significantly lighter and significantly more expensive. I would have no problem recommending the bike to anyone.
Great Bike!     On: 2009-09-13

This bike is a simply awesome bike. I am 17 years old and it meets all my needs. I have ridden it to work multiple times, and i am able to get a lot of exercise when i need it. Very durable and great buy! Oh and it looks awesome too!
Good bike for the price     On: 2009-09-07

I like the way the bike handels in the trails, it was easy to put together however I was unable to tune the gear shifter 100% Ill take it to bike shop to have it don right. I put the bike together in 35min. It is easy if you know what you are doing, but if not it might take little longer. Make sure to check all screws for tightness, some were loose. I do recommend this bike to others! lost of fun, especially when you customize. PS. I got the bike in two days! That was a big plus!
very poor shiftings     On: 2009-08-25

The bike looks great, it has a decent height; nonetheless, the shiftings are horrendous, the bike is heavy and slow, if you can get this for 150 then go for it, but it should be used for sidewalks or perhaps 25 mph on the road. Dont even think you can climb hills with this bike, its literally impossible. I bought this piece of crap for commute biking and Im starting to think it was all a huge mistake. Sigh, just stay away from this one if you are using as a transport vehicle for work or schools specially if there are hills in your town. One other thing do not expect to go more than 35 mph YOU CANT
Great buy     On: 2009-08-15

Wow! This bike is fantastic. It is what i truly expected from GMC. A rugged, all-terrain, and beautiful bike. The front suspension is great i can go over 8" high bumps with ease and pretty much not feel a thing. When I headed into a bumpy path I barely felt the bumps. The speed on this bike is great to even though its not really designed for speed. I installed a computer on my bike with a speedometer built in and by pedalling alone I hit 22 miles per hour easy. The disc brakes are excellent! I could almost literally stop on a dime.

The only problem I have with this bike was with the front derailler. It doesnt want to shift properly from first gear to third gear. I know quite a bit about fixing and tuning bikes and let me tell you trying to fix this was a serious pain. I spent somewhere between an hour to 2 hours trying to adjust the high and low tuning screws for the front derailler. I even tried changing the position of the derailler and not even that worked. I plan on taking it to my nearest bike shop to get it fixed.

Another issue i have is shipping and handling. When i received my bike the condition of the box wasnt so great. There were cuts, holes, and even part of the box was slightly collapsed. I just knew that the bike got damaged some way or another but i figured there would be a few "cosmetic scratches" here and there. When i opened the box and checked out the bike i was right. There where some scratches on the top tube of the bike, the fork, and a big one on the disc brakes brake arm. But other than that nothing else was damaged.

Ive read other reviews that stated that this bike didnt come with instructions on how to put the bike together. That is true but luckily i have had enough experience with bikes that I could do without the instructions. So, i recommend that if you dont have the experience have someone who does help you out. Ive also read that some people arent recommending this bike solely because the brakes and derailler needed to be calibrated and tuned. Frankly, dont expect to get a bike that is already tuned and calibrated when you know that it isnt full assembled.

I rate this bike a 4 out of 5 only because of the problem with the front derailler. I would definitely recommend this bike.
Ouch!     On: 2009-08-06

When I first purchased this product for my son he was enthusiastic. Once we got it home, assembled it, and started riding, the enthusiasim quickly wore off.
The derailers shift very sloppily, Had to replace them in week 2, the "shock" is a cheap spring that has little or no adjustment (replacement ~$ 200.00), the handle bar neck (2 bolt clasp) comes loose during every ride, replaced that neck in week 2 with a 4 bolt version, the front shocks started sticking in the 2nd week, Im looking for new ones (avg cost ~$200.00).
Save your money and buy a more high end bike that already has these quality components, otherwise you will be spending lots of time at your local bikestore upgrading like I am.
Amazing bike... Thanks     On: 2009-07-08

Actually its the one of the best bikes ive seen, very fast, not to heavy like others with same price... The only problem that when i got it , i could not find the assembly instructions inside the box. but it wasnt a big deal. It tooks 30min to 40min like that.
For the shipping i was really surprise, cuz i got it in very short time.
Thanks again
Worth The Money...     On: 2009-06-18

I bought this bike because it had pretty good reviews...and honestly, at 200 lbs. I needed a bike just a little more heavy duty than what was available in a dept. store...When it got delivered, I was quite impressed with the overall build and features of the bike. With dual disc brakes (that work great), quick release hubs and seat post, heavy duty V-rims... shimano componants...it really is quite a nice bike for the price. Ive seen many argue that you should go to a bike shop for a bike...well, I looked around, you can expect to pay between well over $1000. to around $7000. for a dual suspension bike. GET REAL...I only paid $5100. for a brand new Honda XR-650 (motorcycle)...Ive ridden this bike many times now without any problems. Keep in mind, however, that most bikes will need to be "fine tuned" when put together (brake adjustment, derailleur adjustment)These are very simple to do...If you arent sure, go to YouTube...you can find how-to videos there. All in all, I would surely recommend this bike to a friend if you are looking for something just a little nicer than your average dept. store bike.
Alright for the price     On: 2009-06-16

I picked this up for $100 even, its an ok bike. I find the tires/rims combination to be awkward, the deep V rims are so very narrow compared to the wider knobby tires. there is a very noticeable wiggle (from the tire flexing side to side) when on slanted surfaces or after hitting small bumps.
Like most people have commented, the brakes will almost certainly require adjustment, and the rear calliper does rub (just adjust the large retainer nut on the spoke side of the brake calliper, this adjusts the stationary pad). I still only ride this bike for short distances due to a flat tire i got on my first ride (the puncture was spoke side, so wasnt road debris). I might purchase a wider rim for the rear in the future.
Good, but not great.     On: 2009-06-12

I paid for overnighting my package, which didnt arrive for two days, but thats besides the point. The assembly was simple. It took me some time figuring out how to adjust the disc brakes and get them aligned, but once they were, they work great. Ive had the bike for a couple of weeks now and taken it on road and trails.

Pros:Awesome look, good suspension, smooth ride, nice brakes.
Cons:painful seat, heavy(its makes a big difference when youre trying to go uphill), shifters kind of crapy. I was surprised how they jump in and out and have a hard time staying on the right track. I might need them looked at and pay for them to be aligned.

All in all, Im happy and will have a nice ride for a year or two. I probably wont buy a bike online again. I think its more important to be able to ride the bike and feel how it rides and handles vs. just getting a good price and selection. Thanks Amazon!
Good quality, good price     On: 2009-05-23

I got this bike for my husband for his birthday. I put it together in about 2 1/2 hours myself, and test rode it, seems to be working well. The toughest thing was adjusting the disc brakes, which I had never done before. I found it easier to adjust like this: loosen all four bolts holding the caliper assembly on, then lock the brake, tighten the two bolts attaching the assembly, release the brake, spin the tire while manually fine-tuning the position of the pads while looking head-on to see a little daylight on each side of the disc and hear no rubbing, then tighten the remaining two bolts a little at a time while maintaining the position of the caliper by hand. I also had to tweak the inside pad 1/4 turn counter-clockwise, but it worked well! Just need to see how my hubby likes it. The bike looks great, but is heavy. I will try to update this after hes ridden the bike for a bit.
Rear brake always grips the wheel     On: 2009-05-16

The rear disc disc brake was found to always touch the disk, slowing down the bike quickly. Loosing the brake pad to make some space resulted in rear brake not functioning. An enclosed manual was very poor in its content, so I could not figure out how to resolve this problem. Very disappointed. I am going to return it.

Rare Inner Tubes...     On: 2009-04-21

First, based on my experience, dont rely on the specifications posted here for the GMC Topkick Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike; actual parts used and their specifications may vary. Kent does not publish the same specifications.

Second, the original inner tubes for this bike are short on MTB durability and replacements are rare. The tubes on mine have a 48mm or "Long" Schrader valve stem rather than a standard length Schrader, which will not extend through the deep-v rim used on this bike. You can order replacements directly from Kent, use a Schrader valve extension, or convert to inner tubes with 48mm Presta stems.

In a little over three months of ownership, various components and assemblies have needed repair or replacement, including the inner tubes, pedals, brake discs, hub, and cables. Kent International has been very courteous in my dealings with them.
Get something else     On: 2009-02-12

This bike is not worth $300 but if you could get it for the $150 some reviewers got it for thats a different story. Its heavy and very slow. It seems like Im using all my energy and going 2 mph. I usually ride a road bike 100 miles per week so its not me. I would go for a hardtail columbia bike or something for $300 if I could do it over. The suspension just adds weight and soaks up all the pedaling power.
Great bike for most users     On: 2008-07-17

I purchased this bike because the price was great and it came with dual suspension and front/rear disc brakes. The only problem with the bike is that beginner tuners will have a hard time getting the brakes right as well as the gearing. I paid a shop to get it all right for me, the bike works perfect now.

Ive taken this bike on long distances on and off road, down the stairs, up hills. I rode this bike from Long Island to Manhattan with no problems, its pretty light as well. This bike is the best bang for the buck. Its not no professional bike but it gets the job done.

The only other problem with the bike is when your adding serious torque, the bike tends to flex in a way that the front derailleur kind of touches the chain. Its a tiny problem and can be easily overlooked. Also, GMC (or whoever made it) tends to keep the price resonable by adding outdated parts, like the shifter, etc.....thats not a problem for me. New things always cost lots of $$$.

My cousin purchased a bike shop recommended bicycle for almost $300 (front suspension only, and V type brakes), I payed $229 for my topkick. Apparently this recommended bike is supposed to be better than the GMC topkick. Turns out that the GMC topkick is lighter than this recommended bike and rides smoother.

Once again, I recommended this bike for everyone. Just remember to spend the extra $$$ to get a shop to tune it for you.
Excellent choice for the price     On: 2008-07-09

Ive had the GMC Topkick for almost a month now, during which I have been using it daily (home-work); it has also been put to the test on a biking trail in a nearby state park.

First of all, let me say this: the topkick is a beautiful bike. So if fancy looks is the number one factor for you, stop reading and just buy it. It looks rugged, serious, sporty but with a certain "class." Secondly, the bike is indeed amply endowed with disk brakes and full suspension, things one can find only in high-end models costing over $1,500.

On the negative side, this is a heavy bike (did you think they simply "forgot" to mention its weight?). It does not compare to truly lightweight mountain bikes and, although for daily in-city use this is indeed minor, on the trail it can be problematic and make your life quite harder. This is not to say that the bike is unbearably heavy---it still is much lighter than any of my older bikes. Also, the bike comes with no "direct" assembly instructions. However, there are two manuals which more-or-less contain all the necessary instructions scattered among various chapters (e.g., in the how-to-change-a-tire chapter, how-to-install-the-brake chapter, etc.). I do not really consider myself a technically savvy person but I found a way to assemble it by peeking at these (somehow overly technical) instructions within 2 hours, so I guess its not impossible.

As far as the quality of the different parts (brakes, shifting, etc.) is concerned, I am not sure I can express an opinion, as I am no expert. Time will tell; so far so good though. In general I consider my purchase a good one: the bike looks great, does the job and will give you a fun, comfortable ride everywhere. It is not a substitute for a $2,000 bike, but it was never meant to be.

Great Value...Worth the Money!     On: 2008-06-26

GMC Topkick Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike
Amazon came through again with the best price on the web. It was such a good deal that I bought two! With no sales tax and free two day "Prime" shipping, I figure that I saved $200 over store retail for the pair. Packing was about as good as one would expect. There were a couple of small nicks to the frame but a black Sharpie fixed them to where one does not notice. Other than that there was no damage. As other buyers have stated it is a tad heavy (38 lbs?), but that is a testament to its solid construction. The rims are somewhat narrow but I plan to ride more for pleasure than sport. For those two reasons I rated this bike a four out of five stars. If the manufacturer could change those two features it would be a solid five star mountain bike. I am 63" and the frame fits me fine when straddled (it measure 31" at the upper cross bar). I would have liked a higher handlebar height but I can live with it...Thank goodness I have long arms!

I looked at a lot of bikes before making a final decision...All were considerably more expensive with the same basic features. If you plan to ride aggressive this may not be the bike for you...But for street and light off roading it is a real bargin at $229.95.
Good bike for the money     On: 2008-06-26

Lets put it this way: If you dont know how to tune dérailleurs and brakes, youd better learn it now or shell out your dough for others to tune. Chances are, you probably need to tune everything. The bike is very easy to put together. I am a total newbie and it only took me 1.5 hour. However, it took me about a week to finally tune the front/rear dérailleurs and disc brake. Of course, I am a newbie and I am learning and tuning at the same time. It can get frustrating and you might not interested in going through the pain. However, when its all said and done, I have learn and understood and comfortable in bike tuning. For those of you who does not want to DIY, get it to a bike shop. Certainly, if you are very familiar with tuning, usually it can be done in 1-2 hours.

With that said, the quality of the bike is acceptable. The disc brake is functional and brake nicely. The rear dérailleur is good quality shimano part and easy to tune. The front dérailleur is kinda cheap and flimsy and I had a hard to tune it properly. The shifting, in general, louder than average and not very smooth. With tuning, I eliminated under shift, gear skipping, hesitation, and some cage rubbing. I even have to lube the dérailleur to make the spring return mechanism work properly.

The brake cable could use some lubrication. To top these all off, the bike is about 40-50lbs and it is heavy. I weight 150+lb and this thing is almost 1/3 of me. However, the beefy weight does come with a benefit: The aluminum frame is very sturdy and strong. It will last a long time with proper maintenance. However, with that weight, I would not recommend taking it to the "mountain" perform stunt and get crazy. I will stick to the pavement.

The suspension fork is functional and good. The rear suspension is very stiff and I dont feel it smooths out the ride that much. I am trying to save $$ here and quite frankly, I get what I paid for. This bike is not really good, but not bad at all. If you just need a bike to get around town and not into the whole mountain thing and dont mind the weight. By all mean, GET IT. I give it 3-4 STARS.
good bike for the price     On: 2008-06-12

This bike seems to be a pretty good buy. The only complaint that i have about it is that i bought it for my father who is very tall and the handle bars are very low and are not adjustable however i did find a handle bar stem riser made by delta along with a delta hi rise stem which raised the handle bars up perfectly and the cables were all long enough so i didnt have to replace those either. It came with just minor assembly required and I only had to make minor adjustments to the brake cables. I read a couple of the other reviews that had said their were scratches on the frame from shipping when they recieved them mine also had a couple of pretty good scratches on the frame too they could definately package it a little better. The fact that i had to buy extra parts to raise the handle bars and the scratches it recieved in shipping are the only two reasons i gave it a 4 star rating instead of a 5. My dad loves it now that the handle bars are higher and rides it every day. I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants an above department store level mountain bike but doesnt really want to or need to pay the big $$$$ for an overpriced specialty store bike.
great bike     On: 2008-06-05

i bought this bike for my husband and he loves it. Its a very good bike for the price cant ask for more. great purchase and great price. i would totally recommend this bike

Very good item I love it and I will encourage others to get it also.
Satisfied     On: 2008-05-07

Received bike within 2 days of purchace on the first time PRIME trial offer. Bike was in good condition with the exception of the front disk. The disk was a little bit warped but due to hazards of shipping, i didnt complain as i was able to tweak it into its original shape with some needlenose pliers and a little tension. I did have exact item instructions included with my bike for the Promax disk brakes as well as a general bike manual. Not a whole lot of instructions were needed to come with this set-up however, but i did look back on it upon completion for assurance. So far bike seems to hold together very sturdy and comfort is no issue for my body at 61". I shopped around for other bikes with front and rear disk brakes and this was by far the best bike i found for the price. I wasnt too sure of it at first but now i am quite pleased at the quality i recieved and at my bank account for the money i didnt toss away. This bike is also much better looking in person than the one average and small photo that any and all retailers share for this bike. Also, I am not a real fan of the motor company and model it mimicks but as long as its core duties hold to the quality expected, then i could care less if it had Volkswagen printed on it.
Has anyone WEIGHED this thing yet?     On: 2008-04-03

I see reviews all over the place and am wondering whether anyone has yet weighed this bike? In the photos it lookes enormously heavy. Plus, it says it comes with 700cX38mm tires? It that true? IN the pics, the tires look much bigger.
I am considering buying this, and would greatly appreciate any feedback those of you who own it can give.

Outstanding !!

GOOD     On: 2007-07-12

Overall the product is very satisfactory. We have had a couple minor issues, which possibly could be associated with the assembly. Overall, it is a great product and looks very good as well.
Good bike for the money     On: 2007-05-25

Good bang for a buck... Dual suspension + disk brakes. Nicely built sturdy bike.
Great bike, needs instructions....     On: 2007-03-21

First off, I ordered this bike from Amazon at $150 on March 5th and was told 4-6 week delivery at mid April being the estimated ship date. Luckily, I got it by March 20th, assembled it, and just took it out for a test ride. Overall I am very satisfied, it is a very solid bike worth every penny.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, shipping quality isnt astounding, but it doesnt seem like I have any damaged parts other than slight frame scratches.

Assembly is quite tedious and the only fault about this bike I could really come up with was the lack of instructions (besides the bike being a little bit heavy) but it isnt hard to figure out. Only tools you need are hex wrenches and pliers. Mounting the front brake was confusing and tweaking it to align right was tricky, make sure you understand which way to mount and how to tweak before assembling the brake. Also, make sure you screw the pedals in completely. I failed to do so and the pedal snapped out of place while riding, although I was able to fix it.

The dual suspension is really nice to have as well as disk brakes (the main reason I opted for this model) and quick release tires/seat are nice. Seat is a little uncomfortable, shifting isnt that smooth, but both do the job.

The rear suspension takes up space in the middle. I mounted a pump and lock on it but no room for water bottle. The kickstand is not your average flimsy stick, very sturdy. Handle bars arent the best but adequate. Be sure to tighten everything!

The bike was worth every penny at $150 (keep in mind that it came with a claimed 4-6 week wait), jumped to $260 as of today. Id say if it dropped under $200, get it.

great bike great price     On: 2007-03-17

the bike came partialy assembled in good condition , some cosmetic damage but overall a good deal for the money. i would recomend this bike.
Great Bang for the Buck     On: 2007-03-14

My old Cannondale finally gave out. The Topkick looked like the ticket, so I gave it a try. GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK!!! At $150.00 and free shipping, how could you beat this deal. Dual suspension, disc breaks and tough aluminum frame make this one a steal.

PROs: What I said above, including; cool color/style and easy assembly (even though there were no assembly instructions).

CONs: Center frame shock takes up valuable space on the frame for accessories. The paint finish is easily scratched off. The disc breaks take a large amount of tweaking to get set properly. The handlebars are too low (no easy way to raise). This is one heavy bike.

Overall, like I said before. Great Bang For The Buck!!
Good Mountain Bike;Bargain at $150     On: 2007-02-22

This is a good bike - the best feature is the dual suspension. Light and easy dropping off curbs on the way to work - huge difference from my hardtail mountain bike.

Disc brakes are nice to have, on front and rear - work much better than rim brakes. To adjust them hold the brake lever in and tighten them down via a hex wrench on the opposite center of the disc brake until the pads are flush against the disc, then turn back until the brake lever has enough play in it.

The rims are v-shaped, and narrow - much more so than my other bikes. It was quite a job to add tuffy liners to to the tires. I think I will have a bike shop change the tire next time they need it. The hard part is getting the tire off and on those narrow rims. The people at REI said to squeeze on the sides of the tire as you put it on, so both ends go deep into the rim.

Be careful when you put the front tire on that you have the fork facing forward. (I had it backwards the first time). Make sure the big round points on U part of the fork point towards the front of the bike.

The tires are very knobby. If you ride on the street a lot you might want to change them to something with a smoother tread in the middle.

The bike weighs 38 pounds put together - not exactly light, but since I ride for pleasure and exercise, and dont plan to race, the weight is fine.

If you get it for less than 150, (what Amazon is selling it for the week of Feb 20), it is quite a bargain. (disc brakes by themselves often add $100 to a bike).

I raised the seat pretty high for a comfortable ride at my height, and found the handlebars are two low. I fixed this by adding some handlebar extenders which allow me to be more upright when I am not braking.

To my knowledge you cant raise the stem on the handlebars without adding a spacer. If anyone finds out otherwise, please comment to this post.

Another possibility (besides handlebar extensions), would be to replace the handlebar with one that has more of a rise to it.

The Topkick is made by Kent Bicycle Company for GMC. They also make some Cadillac Mountain Bikes - the Cadillac AM2.4 and AM2.7, which are sold on Amazon. They are both dual suspension with disc brakes and have a very similar frame as the Topkick. Both bikes sale for over $1000.

great bike     On: 2007-02-21

i Just got this bike today. took about an hour of assembly, and required a lot of tightening. as most people have already said, there are no instructions included, but assembly is pretty straight forward. shifting can be a little troublesome, but i think i need to do a little tweaking with that.

Great     On: 2007-02-08

This is a great bike.
However, the shipping dented the chain and it costed me 40 dollars to get it repaired/new one. I called amazon and they gave me a refund for the money i had spent in no time. I have to say, amazon customer support is great (at least off holiday season).

GMC Topkick- middle of the pack     On: 2007-01-11

Bike is a little flimsy for the price. Went together OK, but no instructions as most people indicated. No broken parts on receipt. My first dual suspension bike. Shifting could be more accurate, but overall an average bike for the price.
Topkick is topkick     On: 2007-01-09

Fabulous bike!!! It appears that they have thought of everything for the rider. Dont know about jumping or other extreme sports, but for everyday use its right on. Workmanship is defined by the details and this bike has it. No sloppy welds anywhere.

:-)

GMC Topkick     On: 2006-11-18

This bike is phenomenal, i enjoy riding it AFTER i assembled, i do not reccomend this bike to people who are begginers to the world of Mountain Bikes. I found NO assembly instructions for this bike inside like many others. Luckily i have assembled bikes before. When i opened the bikes packagind it wasnt the best box,I believe it was handled poorly. When assembling the bike i noticed the Disc Brakes took ALOT of tweaking. My rear disc break was not properly fit for the bike, OR shipping bumped it and damaged the rear disc, causing it to bend and mechanical failure. I found myself NOT using the Rear Brakes anymore,it was rubbing on the caliper constatly making a noise and slowing me down. I decided to just take off the top and tie back the wire. I reccomend looking into a more exspensive shipping unless you want bent parts. Its a nice bike, but small things like that make the company look poor in the eyes. So i reccomend looking into an inch smaller Rear Disc Brake. A good bike that needs a little more than assembly. Hope my review helps Customers!!

Excellent bike for its price!     On: 2006-10-31

Phenomenal bike! That is all I can say, especially for the price. Ideal for casual riding. This bike however came with instructions and was purchased from Dunhams in Michigan for about $200.00.

Pros: Stylish, Appealing, both aluminum and steel build, and the full strut suspension system gives it a comfortable ride. Disc brakes are very nice, too!

Cons: (applied to stock build only) After long rides the pedal-bearing hub assembly becomes tightened, very difficult to pedal forward until you reverse-pedal. The rims are too narrow and the high knobs will cause the tire to twist making it difficult to ride sideways on concrete slopes at 45 degree angles or more, The rear suspension system makes is difficult to buy accessories such as a rear tray or basket, The rear derailleur causes the chain to "jump" only during high speed/heavy torque conditions (rear derailleur=7 front=3)

Overall: BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. Its a beautiful bike that grabs alot of attention everywhere I go.

Facts: I am solid, 200lbs 510" from Michigan, Ride bikes an average of 4hrs/day, in harsh climates/terrains, (Mich. area) and daily commuting 7 days/week. Im tough on bikes, and haul groceries with my trailer attached to it.
(good job, GMC/Kent bikes)
Great bike...however....     On: 2006-09-16

well i just recently got this bike. It came with no instructions...it was really easy to put together though. The front disk breaks have to be tweaked before its maiden voyage. Also the back gearshift needs to be adjusted before the first ride. Its a really nice bike for its price. Its a great bike i recommend it for anyone who likes dirt trails.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS     On: 2006-08-31

THIS BICYCLE IS EVERYTHING I EXPECTED. ONLY COMPLAINT I HAVE IS THAT THERE WERE NO ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS PACKAGED WITH THE BIKE. AN OWNERS MANUAL CAME WITH IT, BUT ALL IT TELLS YOU IS TO SEE YOUR DEALER IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, PLUS ALL THE SAFETY INFORMATION REQUIRED FOR A BICYCLE. OTHER THAN HAVING TO FIGURE OUT THE ASSEMBLY, THIS IS A VERY NICE BIKE.
