I can open the trunk glass door of my car while this rack is on when I tilt it, which is very convenient. It will accommodate 3 bikes if all of them have a bar going from the upper seat bar to the handle bar like it is common on most road bikes. If you have bikes with a lowered or w/o such a bar like on some women bikes it might be a challenge to get 3 bikes on this rack or find a good position at all even for one single bike. Try it out before you buy it. If you use this rack dont forget to secure your front handle bar. I did that and the cable of my bike computer broke due to tension when the handle bar turned around while driving.... Great Trailer Rack-with a couple of issues On: 2009-06-12Ordered the Deluxe 3 bike rack from Niagara Bike Shop; arrived on time and in great condition. Used on a 5 day road trip through the Catskills in NY; dirt roads as well as freeway. No issues at all. Only problem was that the retaining pin and associated holes in the tang of the rack were considerably smaller than the pin hole on the 1 1/4" hitch receiver on my Volvo. I had to drill out the hole on the rack so the larger pin would work. The result was that there were no issues with the rack moving or vibrating. Solid fit, no problem. Good quality construction, would buy another. Easy to install and sturdy, some rust On: 2009-06-03We had this rack for about 2 months. Installation on our Jeep was easy and we have used it 5-6 times with two bikes. I usually add an additional bungee cord to make sure wheels etc are fixed and does not move around when driving. I did notice some rust developing after it having been exposed to rain a few times so I will add some rust protectant. But overall very happy, we have not had any trouble with this unit and it was worth the money for sure. Best Bike Rack  On: 2009-05-31We purchased the bike rack to put on my husbands truck so we could take our bikes to the Cape Cod Canal (which we live near) to bike on week nights after work. The rack was very easy to install. It only took him about a half hour to get it on. We have used it for a month now and have had no problems at all with it. It is very sturdy and easy to get the bikes on and off. The straps are strong and simple to use. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a muliple bike rack. Allen customer Service dropped the ball...  On: 2009-05-24I received the Allen bike rack in April and after assembling the rack and attaching to my new hitch I realized there was far too much play in the vertical post that carries the bikes. Without bicycles the vertical post wobbles as I drive - enough to hear it banging back and forth in city driving - country roads would drive you crazy! (With the bikes mounted the additional weight reduces the posts movement.) I contacted Allen Racks, they suggested tightening all bolts which I did. Still lots of movement so I emailed a picture showing the range of vertical positions front to back. Here is the service persons response to the picture : "Wow - something definitely doesnt look correct here. Can you please provide your shipping address?" On April 29th I requested a new rack, at least the two parts not fitting well together. Ive never received those parts and a reminder to that clerk hasnt brought any results other than, "These will ship today. Sorry for the delay." emailed may 13th. No items have been received at this time (late May). I automatically shop thru Amazon because of their support and the usual integrity of their suppliers. Well, beware as Allen Racks service might be a problem if you find, as I did, a need for parts. By the way, email and phone responses have been adequate. And other than the vertical post over play and wobble the rack is a pleasure to use. I love this rack and got it for a lot better price than this! On: 2009-04-18First of all, I purchased this with Amazon as the retailer. Unlike the $111 its currently being advertised at, I got it for an amazing $63.95 just a couple months ago. The price difference for this is staggering. $111 for this rack is a decent deal though, but I definitely stole it. If you can hold off on buying one, maybe try during the winter months since it may be in less demand then - perhaps thats why I got it so much cheaper. It also arrived in 3 days. This is my second Allen rack and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Im much more than a casual rider, so Im cautious about what I use to transport my bike since its become a significant investment. This was my first hitch mount rack and I didnt experience any kind of wobble like several people described. The nylon straps secure it nicely with no loosening even on long drives. It lowers nicely away from the hatch too. The only thing I would caution is that this is a 3 bike carrier if the bikes are road bikes or maybe 2 road bikes and a sleeker hybrid. It will not hold 3 hybrid or comfort bikes. Great Value On: 2009-03-24This is a great value for the biker that wants to get to those far-away trails. I use it on my 1999 Lexus and it is a dream. Sturdy and well built, it carries 2 adult bikes with ease. The cradles to hold the cross tube will twist so that you can easily adjust to hold a female-style or other unusual bike. If there is a downside it would be that you have to use a wrench and ratchet to install it to the hitch. I am also going to be watching how many times I can use the nut before the locking washer needs to be replaced. Use a tube of thread lock on all the other bolts when you assemble to ensure it stays together down the road. Built very well On: 2008-12-12I purchased this product in order to take 2-3 bikes on camping trips or down to the local trails. It works very well. Its construciton is very sturdy and I have had no problems with the actaul hitch. I did run into a major problem when I sold my Explorer and purchased a Volvo SUV. The hitch does not come out far enough from the SUV to be able to attach it for use. If you have a Volvo SUV, look for another hitch. If not, this ones great. Pretty darn good On: 2008-11-16Easy install, easy on-off, pretty durable. Kinda hold my odd-framed mountain bike in a clumsy way, but still holds it. Great with street bikes. Buy it ! Great Bike Rack On: 2008-10-22This is a great bike rack! It does not wobble side to side at all like I have read in some reviews. Maybe theyve changed their design. Customer service is great too! I broke a part through my own fault and customer service at Allen actually sent me a replacement at no cost - no questions asked (it was the part that slides in to the hitch, so it was a more expensive part I imagine). BTW...dont try to drill out the hole in order to use a locking hitch pin or you will create wobble....thats how I broke the part in the first place... Allen Delux Hitch Mount Bike Rack On: 2008-10-20This is the second one I purchased. I liked the first so well I decided to get another one for car # 2. Its hard to to beat for the price Works Great On: 2008-09-18Word of advice though if you have a spare tire on the back of your vehicle you will need a hitch extension. I did not realize or even think about the way it folds out to use it. It has part of the support bar that ends up between the vehicle and the main support that did not clear the spare tire and would have even been close without the tire. I bought an extension and it works great! Light and Easy!! On: 2008-09-04Bought this after seeing it on someone elses truck. Its easy to put together and light enough for one person to put it on the vehicle. Dont be fooled by the low price tag! It is a very sturdy bike rack. Allen Delux 3-Bike hitch mount rack On: 2008-09-02I purchased this rack to fit my 2" receiver hitch on my Nissan Xterra specifically for a trip to Colorado on a Summer Mountain Bike Quest. This rack proved 100% reliable on the trip..no complaints at all to speak of...it is very nice to be able to leave the rack on the vehicle and move it out of the way in order to open the rear hatch. Trust me, it is worth the extra money... No help On: 2008-08-11My bike rack arrived with two bolts missing. I E-mailed Allen Co. their reply was that they were not the ones who sold me the bike rack and that their name is not Amazon.com and this is not their respondibility to replace the missing bolts. I then E-mailed Amazon.com twice asking for the missing parts. Amazon did not reply either time. I guess it wasnt their problem either. I went to the local hardware store and bought the bolts to replace the missing ones, assembled the bike rack and took my bikes on a two hundred mile trip. I had no problems with the bike rack. The bikes were secure at all times. The bike rack is great the customer service at Amazon.com is lousy. Good value On: 2008-08-04This took a little sweat to install, but just a little! On a daily basis it is very easy to use. Make sure all bolts are tight, and you are set to go. All the straps keep the bike(s) firmly in place. Bar tucks down when not in use. Very easy to swing unit down in order to open up back of truck. Definately worth the money. Allen Deluxe 3 Bike Hitch Mount Bike Rack On: 2008-07-31This item was very easy to install and use. I bought it and used it several times and I do like it. Blk powder finish and its strong. The shipping box was alittle torn up but no damage was done. Very happy with this purchase. Quality control concerns.  On: 2008-07-14The rack had to be taken to a welder in order to drill the hole so that the receiver lock which was purchased in the same order would fit into the hitch. The factory hole was to small. The pin that held the rack from going forward was not positioned properly in the hole and would slip out allowing the rack to fall forward while going over a speed bump . The welder had to install a plate in order for this to function properly. Basically very poor quality control. Out of pocket expense was twenty five dollars. Great Choice On: 2008-07-09We made a great choice for our bike rack. We have three adult size bikes and they were easy to load and they didnt move at all on our trip. The best hitch for the money On: 2008-06-18This hitch is great. I ordered the 2" receiver. Its very heavy-duty which is what I was concerned about most. It holds 3 bikes although it holds 2 easier. If I did it again I might order the 4 bike one to accomadate my 3 bikes. But its great on my SUV(expedition). It swings down to allow me to open the glass and the whole back door if need be. The straps tie down easy and come off easy also. It doesnt bounce at all as it has a special bolt that holds it in the receiver. It also folds down when not in use so that you can just leave it on you truck. Great Bike Rack; Solid Construction On: 2008-06-13I am very happy with this rack. It is extremely solid and strong. I strongly recommend it. The picture has an "L" bend at the bottom but the one I received has a curved bend. Looking at Allens Website I think the curved bottom is the newest model. The rack fits 3 adult mountain bikes with no problems described by others. Great Rack Espceially for the Money On: 2008-06-04I am very happy with this rack and I am glad that I went with the hitch type rack. My car is a Honda Accord which has a UHAUL installed receiver hitch which you can barely notice.The rack was very easy to assemble and even easier to use. I have had those trunk mounted racks before which allow for way to much contact between the bike and my cars paint. This rack takes about 5 minutes to hook up to my car. The bike goes onto the rack in about 3 minutes. I would recommend getting a trailer hitch pin that locks instead of the one that just comes with a cotter pin. I hoped this review helped. Beware!  On: 2008-05-20I purchased this bike rack in January to carry bikes on the back of my travel trailer. I had been used 4 times successfully but the 5th time was not a charm. One of the bolts that the arms pivot up and down on broke as I was driving on the highway. I heard tire chirping and got out to see what the noise was, when I came around the back I saw my bicycle, which was on the outside, hanging down to the road and the back tire had been jumping up and down on the road as I was driving. The other two bikes were ok. One bolt had sheared in half and the other held. If you have this rack or are thinking about buying it, you might think about removing these bolts and replacing them with hardened bolts (which these are not). A bolt remover was unsuccessful. Retapping the threads doesnt look like an option. The option looks like buying a new rack. Thanks for reading, I hop this helps someone. Thanks again amazon for the excellent price. Great product, easy to use! On: 2008-04-05I have been so pleased with this bike rack! It is very sturdy and is designed so well. The part that holds the bike is very easy to snap up or fold away. The rack is very quick and easy to tilt away from the cargo area of my SUV. There is no swaying, rattling, or movement while Im driving. The bikes are fairly easy to get on. The mens bike goes on extremely easily. The womens bikes are not quite as easy to put on the rack, so Im thinking about getting the extra bar to make them easier. Also note that if you tilt the rack when it is loaded with bikes, its a little heavy to tilt back up. Not a design flaw, just the law of gravity! Overall, an excellent buy! Can't get better rack for the money On: 2008-04-03I have owned this rack for 4 years. I bought it because the price was far cheaper then other brands. I dont have any problems in the time I purchased it. It handles three bikes, drops down if you have a truck and need to get into the bed. I has a safety clamp that safeguards the rack from dropping. This rack is not totally rigid. I mean it will move around but completely safe. Its built with extruded metal and very strong. Its a good buy. You may want to put some reflection decals on the rack just to warn other cars that you have bike and rack on the rear of the vehicle. Bike safely! Great value. Stable and strong. On: 2008-03-30Great value. Stable and strong. This is my first hitch bike rack and I have no complaints. Note you have to cushion or keep your bikes from swinging into the vertical support. Also I caution you against using the included stop nut (with interior plastic collar) on the hitch pin. I used the included stop nut with an optional locking hitch pin and upon removal, it seized on the pin, forcing a lot of work to cut the pin in order to remove the hitch. So far, Ive taken two bikes on the rack for ~60 mile ride. I was impressed on its sturdiness. I contacted Allen Racks and requested a non-wobble lock for the 1-1/4" hitch. Currently, they only make a non-wobble lock for the 2" rack. They told me that the 1-1/4" non-wobble lock will be available sometime in January, 2008. So, for now Im using a 14 cable to keep the rack locked to the hitch. Allen Deluxe 3-bike hitch mount rack (1.25) On: 2007-08-06Very good bike rack! I would recommend it to anyone. The only draw back is a good method for locking bikes on rack. It is easy to cut straps for someone wanting to steal your bike. This is why I give it four stars. A good sturdy rack. To bad it doesnt accommodate womens bikes better. False claim about fitting all vans and SUVs On: 2007-07-26The rack itself appears sturdy and well made. I purchased it to fit a 2" receiver for my KIA Sedona Van. (The info online clearly stated specifically for SUVs and Vans.) After putting it together I attached it to my receiver and it knocks against the bumper. You cannot use the release pin because it is too tight up to the bumper. You would cause damage to the bumper. I am currently looking for an extension for the hitch, hoping it wont add alot of play to the rack when loaded. It never even moved, it was perfect. I cannot recommend it enough. ...and the fold down feature is essential. Best deal that I have found for under $100 by: mrbean55 On: 2007-06-04 I have been looking for an inexpensive 1.25-inch hitch rack capable of carrying up to three bikes for my smaller vehicle. I originally bought one made by Graber, but it wobbled too much for my liking. I returned the Graber rack, did some more research and decided to give the Allen rack a try. From the minute I opened the box, I noticed that the packaging and instructions were of far better quality then my previous rack. It was very easy to install, as long as you have two 9/16-inch wrenches to make bolt tightening go smoothly. The rack is very solid, it does not wobble at all when attached to my car, the attached straps allow the bikes to fit securely, and the rack folds down to save space when not in use. In addition, you can swing it back to allow open you cars rear hatch without removing the rack from the hitch. The biggest downside with this rack is that it lacks a way to lock your rack to the hitch. However, purchasing a new bolt that allows a lock to be attached can probably solve this issue. It comes in three pieces that are easily put together. I replaced the half inch bolt that came with the rack with a half inch locking pin (WalMart). This secures the rack to my trailer hitch. The rack rides very well. I hear no rattles with the rack empty or 1-2-3 bikes. Sturdy & well made - Im very pleased. Great bike rack by: mind_creations On: 2007-05-03 I got this bike rack a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time on a pretty long trip this past weekend and it worked great! The rack is easy to assemble out of the box and is also available in a 2 inch receiver if your hitch is slightly larger than the 1.25 inch receiver. The reviewer below said that the way the rack bolts into the hitch is problematic- I had no problems at all. To secure the bolt all you need is a 9/16 wrench with a ringed end and a socket wrench. On the left side of the bolt hold it in place with the ringed in of the 9/16 and use the socket wrench to tighten the bolt through. Keep doing this until it wont go anymore and jerk on the rack a bit- it is extremely steady and will NOT sway back and forth. The bolt does not come loose either. I did not re-tighten it not once on a 3 hour road trip, though I did check to make sure it was still secure. The straps are excellent on the hitch and really secure the bike to the frame. I wouldnt have had to to use any extra ropes or ties (though I did just to be safer than sorry in the first time using it). Male bikes load perfectly on the hitch whereas female bikes require a little extra work/positioning. Might want to tie the tires together with some twine just so they wont hit each other on bumps. So this is the first bike hitch Ive ever owned and I really like it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering purchasing one. You cant beat the price that Amazon has. These are at least $139-$150 in stores. Amazon gives you free shipping- free 2-3 day shipping if you are an Amazon Prime Member... which is pretty sweet.
