It is what it is     On: 2009-05-10

I give this speedometer/odometer four stars not because its one of the best you can buy, but because it is what it is, a handy and reliable device that is about as good as you can expect for $14.99.

I bought this some time ago (iit was $12.97 then) and have since logged over a thousand miles, so I can speak with an authority now that I could not when it was first installed.

I bought this partly because I wanted simple and partly because these are so much easier to read than the electronic ones (the fact that no batteries are required is also a giant plus) and partly because it appears to be just like the one I had when I was a kid. Also because its not the sort of thing anybody would steal (that has so far proven to be true). Like the many others who downgraded the product in this and its other listings, I noticed and was puzzled by the lack of instructions. Fortunately, two kind-hearted souls have provided more than sufficient instructions here [http://www.amazon.com/review/R1DV0DLO0HUKU9/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm] and here [http://www.amazon.com/review/R17Y2C28SYRZGS/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm]. All I can add to them is to emphasize the caution that you not overtighten the drive gear (the gray round thing with the jutting tab that the spokes catch in order to make the whole thing work). If you squash it, you stand a good chance of causing it to break, either right away or after some usage (if youre concerned that you might break it anyway, go ahead and order another one when you order the unit; it will cost only a pittance, whereas if you order it later, youll have to pay more in postage than the part is worth).

But once its installed, does the unit do what its supposed to do? Yes and no. For the price, were not talking Swiss precision here, and both the speedometer and odometer are off by about 10%. However, I suspect that this may be largely due to being calibrated for a 27" wheel (I have a 26"). Installed on a 27" wheel, the accuracy would of course be much improved. There is also an issue with the speedometer itself. On the flats, its just fine. But if an incline or decline is more than moderate, it begins to thwack thwack thwack like a windshield wiper. But, again, were not talking Swiss precision. And if youre more concerned with distance than speed, the odometer works just fine (and if you gauge your effort by the number of pedal revolutions you make in a second, your "speed" as shown in the display is largely irrelevant anyway).

Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I buy another if somebody stole it? Yes. And if it could be calibrated for a 26" wheel and the speedometer werent so wacky, Id give it a five. Just remember that its plastic and its made in China.

Toy Speedometer     On: 2009-02-21

Got this speedo for my Diamondback Wildwood Citi and after checking if against a GPS and car it reads 20mph and my real speed was 13.5mph thats 6.5mph faster then I was going. Furthermore after riding 12 miles (miles confirmed with car and moped) the odometer showed 1 mile more then the real distance. Also there is no way to correct this other then removing the speedometer and getting another type. I am sure that its ONLY made for a 27" bike not a 26"(80"per wheel rev.)and for the price I didnt expect perfection but 6.5mph off is really bad.
I think this would be a good speedometer for a child as its more Toy then real speedometer.
thats my $0.02 worth

SUPER CHEAP AND WORKS GREAT     On: 2008-12-13

EASY TO INSTALL EVEN WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS. HAS WORKED GREAT SO FAR, IT IS ALL PLASTIC WHICH SUCKS BUT FOR 6 DOLLARS PLUS SHIPPING ITS WELL WORTH IT. JUST MAKE SURE THAT NOTHING IS BINDING UP OR YOU WILL BRAKE IT
Speed Zone !     On: 2008-11-01

This produce checked out with my vehicle. Easy to install, easy to read safely while riding.
Great Speedometer!     On: 2008-10-29

I would like to say that this is the best speedometer Ive ever had. Its accurate, dependable, and inexpensive. Its easy to read and install. The only thing is I had to obtain a longer axle for my front wheel so the fork has a better fit. About a half inch to 3/4 longer works. Some bikes already have axles long enough, so try to install it first. Anyway, its a good product and Im glad that I found it..
Speedometer Pyramid     On: 2008-09-18

I purchased this speedometer on 8/18/2008 and when it got 57 miles on it, It quit working. The needle went all the way around and has not worked since. I would not purchase or recommend this product again.
Worst piece of plastic     On: 2008-06-12

This speedometer is a cheap knock-off. It is all plastic. One trip down a bumpy road and the odometer failed after 2.5 miles. Once I opened it up everything from the dial face plate right down to the gears inside is all PLASTIC! Hardly worth the aggravation to go through to install it. It doesnt even come any instructions. It has "JUNK" written all over it. What a waste of money. The only thing made of metal are two face plate screws, two rear case screws and the drive cable. Oh and did I forget the mount. The gauge metal was hardly stronger than cardboard.
speedometer     On: 2008-04-12

does not fit greenline beach bikes.I installed one on a mountain bike, found it to be noisy, except at low speeds.
Nice addition to bike     On: 2008-03-27

recently purchased speedo and am very happy with this product, though i was not keen on the plastic speedometer. Installation of the speedo drive was fairly easy. It puts minimal drag on wheel and looks really good on the bike - gives it a nice retro touch.
Nice looking Speedometer!     On: 2008-02-26

This is a really cool speedometer if youre trying for the retro look as I am. The odometer is lacking in reliability, and Im uncertain about the accuracy of the speedometer, and the cable was just a tad long for my application; however, the needle moves quite well... Ill buy one for every bike Ill own!
Loved it while it worked     On: 2007-11-11

I got a bicycle in mid June and purchased this Speedometer Pyramid Pro 26/27 with Resettable Odometer about a month later. I was riding almost every day between 15 and 22 miles and liked seeing the length of my rides and checking the time it took for these rides. This guage is easy to read and while it worked it was a joy to see the miles ticking along. It no longer is resettable as the third digit to the left does not move in coordination with the other slots. It is no longer an accurate odometer as the other slots dont work either most of the time. Not a reliable odometer although the speed still works. I would have loved this product if it had not malfunctioned after only 3 months.
Speedometer     On: 2007-10-05

As a previous reviewer indicated, this comes with no instructions, though I did not find it too difficult to install. The only problem I had was figuring out which side of the bike to mount the rotating tooth that engages with the spokes. If you do it on the wrong side, then you have to take it off and re-mount it on the others side of the wheel. So, I assembled the entire speedometer and simple held the end that connects to the wheel up to the wheel with the bike upside down. I then gave the wheel a good spin while holding the speedometer up to either side of the wheel to see which way was correct. The other thing to note is that it is in KM/H and KM, not MPH and Miles. So, be ready to multiply the readings by 0.6 for a quick conversion.
works great     On: 2007-09-22

My husband liked his so much he ordered one for a friend. The only problem we found is the cable was too short to fit his friends bike.. Other wise I would reccomend this product.
Bike speedomter with odometer     On: 2007-09-17

The speedometer works well and the odomter lets you know how far you have ridden. The price is definitely right but it should come with installation instructions.
LOVE THE SPEEDOMETER     On: 2007-08-15

I purchased the speedometer for my 66 yr old daddy. He loves riding his bike but wanted to know how fast he was going and how far he went. He loves it and has put about 100 miles on it already.
thanks
Retro Speedo     On: 2007-08-11

The installation was quick, easy and straight forward. I especially like the analog readout rather than digital. That way I dont have to "read" the display,I can tell by relative position of the indicator what my speed is. Thats much quicker, and safer.
Peddle 15MPH for 1HR = 0 miles!     On: 2007-07-31

This odometer worked great for a week or so, but it now no longer keeps track of the miles, only the speed. Its not the same as the one in the picture, but i dont expect to get the speed up that high anyway.

I didnt think about it before but the gauge design does slow you down ever so very slightly.
speedo     On: 2007-05-18

This is a nice product although for most people, directions for installing would be welcome. I had no problem in this area since I do this type of thing(installing).
Pyramid Speedometer/Odometer Installation     On: 2007-04-28

I purchased this item from Niagara Cycle Works and received it promptly. Their price was more appealing than RDS Bikes. This type of instrument was common years ago but the older ones were made of metal and had a small diameter metal wheel attached to the spokes. The disc was perforated near the outside edge and a metal gear meshed with the disc to drive the speedometer cable which in turn operated the speedometer and odometer. This made in China product is genuine plastic. While not the quality of the old American models, it operates very well and for the money I am most satisfied with it. It is easy to read while riding compared to the electronic models which can be very difficult due to light reflection. The installation is very simple. Noting a complaint regarding lack of instructions, here is how installation is done: The accessory has 3 basic parts - the head (as pictured above), the drive cable and the drive gear assembly. Starting at the bottom, the drive gear has a metal arm that protrudes through the spokes. This, in turn, rotates a small wheel that powers a gear that rotates the cable that runs up to the head. (it remains to be seen how well this will hold up over time as the remainder of the drive gear is plastic)
Unbolt the front wheel after deciding if you want the head on the right or left side of your handle bars. The drive gear can be mounted on the left or right side of the axle There is a plastic cap that screws on the end where the cable is not inserted, the cable can be inserted from 2 directions, just one is needed, insert it into the top side and the cap goes to the bottom. Unbolt the front wheel and remove it. Recenter the axle slightly to compensate for the space used by drive gear attachment. Slide a washer (provided) onto the axle, the drive gear, a second washer and then reattach the wheel to the fork. It might take a bit of pulling to slightly spread the fork. Position the drive gear so that the cable can go straight into the drive gear attachment, tighten your front axle bolts - but - not too tight as you do not want to break the plastic gear housing. The cable screws in on the top side. Mount the head on the handle bars, screw the other end of the cable into the head and you are in business! One more thing: To keep the cable from snagging onto something, I used a couple of plastic cable ties to bring the cable tight up against the side of the fork. As the handle bars and front fork turn in unison, there is no binding of the cable. Would I buy anogther one? I would without hesitation should the need arise. I have seen replacement drive gears advertised for a few dollars, so no sweat if the drive gear apparatus wears out. Not being interested in 15 or so functions that the electronic models offer, this one suits me just fine. Hope this helps anybody with questions of how these are installed.
Speedometer - Odometer     On: 2007-01-05

I purchased this item to keep track of the miles I ride my bike each time I go to the park. It is very nice to know if I have ridden 10, 15, 20 miles. And the speed I am riding is also nice to know. This item is reasonably easy to install. It is very easy to read. I am glad I have this item on my bike. However, on some English racing style bikes which have the fast, easy off front tire, this item may not work. This item appears to be made for bikes where the front wheel is permantly bolted fork. If the front wheel has the fast remove handle, there may be a problem installing the cable.
Poor Seller - no instructions, no support     On: 2006-12-30

The product came in a timely fashion and seems neat, however it came with no instructions. I emailed the company through Amazon and did not receive a reply. My son is very disappointed that his new accessory doesnt work and I am very disappointed that the company will not support their product.
