Amazing Avenir ATB Pedals! A simple search for "bike pedals" here on Amazon.com resulted in these amazing Avenir ATB Pedals showing up first. Was just looking for a simple pair of replacement pedals for my sons bike, and these were the first that showed up. It seems that replacing bike pedals is becoming an annual occurrence the older he gets (and the further distances he travels), so Im becoming resigned to our performance of this ritual together. The photo looked like a pretty generic resin or plastic pedal with a built-in reflector, as you can see for yourself. But little did I expect to find such gems as these when I did this search, and after reading the specs, just knew that I had to buy them. Ill just repeat here what I found: Product Features * Lightweight sleeping bag is ideal for mild weather camping * Polyester outer shell offers durable, long-lasting use * Printed polyester inner material provides cozy warmth * Insul-Therm Therm provides comfort down to 30 degrees * Measures 77 inches long by 33 inches wide You can imagine my amazement when I read these extraordinary features, especially where the "polyester inner material provides cozy warmth," and the "Insul-Therm Therm provides comfort down to 30 degrees." Sounds perfect for bike riding and keeping ones feet warm during the snowy winters we get here in Pennsylvania. Must admit that Ive never seen bike pedals before that measure 77 inches long by 33 inches wide, and Im just wondering if Amazon.com is going to ship them by USPS or UPS. So yes, with product features like these, I felt compelled to order them, if only out of curiosity. And luckily Im prepared, as Im the proud owner of a genuine Park Tool Pedal Wrench (also know as a "PW-3") made from Cro-Moly steel and which fits both 15mm and 9/16 inch pedals. This isnt the normal wrench that one would find in a regular home toolbox, but when I found it at a yard sale this summer, where it was marked as a "left-handed monkey wrench" by the seller, I grabbed it for an amazing price. So why would someone need a Cro-Moly steel PW-3 from Park Tool to just change bike pedals? Bike pedal threads are different from left side and right side. The right side pedal has a right-hand thread (removes counterclockwise, installs clockwise). The left side pedal has a left-hand thread (removes clockwise, installs counterclockwise). Many pedals are stamped "L" and "R" for left and right. Additionally, the thread will appear to slope up toward its tightening direction. Left hand threads slope up to the left, while right hand threads slope up to the right. Got that? In any case, the old pedals are often rusted on, requiring a few zaps of WD-40 to loosen them up, then a bit of good old-fashioned elbow grease applied with that Cro-Moly steel PW-3 wrench. Once thats done, the new pedals can be installed, reversing the removal procedure noted above. And if I cant remember which direction to turn the wrench (do I turn it clockwise or counter-clockwise...) to properly install the amazing new Avenir ATB Pedals, I can always refer to the new Park Tool The Big Blue Book of Repair - 2nd Edition for good instructions. Cant wait to see how these pedals are going to be "ideal for mild weather camping," thats for sure! |
