I have been a faithful user of Shimano clipless pedals (various ones) for a long time. After a particularly muddy run, and not being able to clip in (again) because of a clogged pedal...I decided to switch. I havent been able to give these a real good thrashing because of the extreme cold weather, but I can share what Ive observed so far. The other things Ive read in reviews are true: you do not get the satisfying "click" with these pedals that you do with Shimanos. You also do not feel as attached to the pedal as you do with Shimanos. However, these things do force you to actually have proper pedaling form instead of letting the clip and shoe do the work of keeping your foot on the pedal.
That being said, the Candy does do several things very well: one, it ejects your foot from the clip. I have them on the lightest setting, and I am going to recommend them to my riding buddies that have been skittish about upgrading to clipless. They literally push your foot out of the pedal when you want out. That being said, I havent had the chance to really knock them about on a rocky trail and see if I get an accidental pop out. I will most likely switch them to the harder setting come spring time. Two, it clears out mud very well. Three, if you pedal properly they stay stuck to your feet just fine.
Again, I havent really knocked these around...but what Ive seen already seems promising. I look forward to the spring thaw and really getting into the mud and gnarl.
