Reviews A good teacher and a very good writer by: on: 21-Jul 2009 I purchased several books about bike mechanics to learn about how to care for my new recumbent trike. They are all very good, but Mel has wonderful step-by-step instructions along with hundreds of excellent photos that really assisted my understanding of how a bike really works and how to care for it. In addition, she is an excellent entertaining writer so the book is a "good read" too. The book is well laid out with clearly marked sections. I highly recommend this book to you. The basics-plain and simple by: on: 07-Jun 2009 For the first time, do it yourself bike mechanic, this very basic and concise read is a great start for anyone regardless if they have a $25 thrift shop special or the high end Cervelo in their garage. Granted some of the sections may look daunting (V-brakes, cartridges, derailers) but really it is your best opportunity to get familiar with the bicycle you own. Ms. Atwood does a remarkable job of making a bicycle as beautifully detailed as it is a simple machine with no bounds. Got a Nexus 8 hub? If so, you must buy this book! by: on: 19-Nov 2008 This is the only bicycle repair book I have ever found that has step-by-step instructions and color photos for the removal of a wheel with a Nexus 8 internal hub gear, as well as how to put it back on the bike. Not only that, but she's really good at explaining the whole process. As much as I admire and respect the work of the late Sheldon Brown, I found Mel's directions to be much easier to understand and follow. View All Bicycle Repair Books |
